Find the licence number and the operating company name in the site footer, then look both up on the regulator's own register. Never rely on the badge itself, which is an image that anybody can copy.
Check that the company named on the register is the company named in the site terms. A mismatch between the two is a meaningful warning even when both documents individually look legitimate.
What a Licence Gets You
It establishes that a named company exists, has been through some form of check, and can be complained to at an address that is not the casino itself. That is a real floor and it is genuinely better than nothing.
Regimes vary widely in how actively they supervise, how quickly they respond and whether they will intervene in an individual dispute at all. Treat the licence as evidence a company can be identified rather than as a guarantee of outcome.

None of them provide the British complaints route, and none provide compensation if the operator becomes insolvent. Your balance is not protected in the way money in a bank is protected.
